The WhatsApp Gold scam is one of the longest running messaging hoaxes. It is not the same as the unofficial Gold mod.
How the scam works
Someone messages you claiming WhatsApp has launched a Gold premium version. The message usually includes a link. That link leads to a phishing page, malware or a survey farm. WhatsApp itself has confirmed there is no official Gold product.
How it differs from the Gold mod
| Scam message | Gold mod APK | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Unexpected chat | A page you chose |
| Ask | Click a link, sometimes pay | Sideload an APK you downloaded |
| Result | Phishing or malware | Unofficial app with ban risk |
| Made by Meta | No | No |
What to do if you get the message
- Do not click the link.
- Block and report the sender.
- Tell friends the message is fake.
If you already clicked
Change important passwords, run a malware scan, and check bank alerts.
